Hey there! Our Halloween Spooky Drawing continues with this beginner-friendly tutorial that you can finish in under 30 minutes.

I encourage you to read the text in my posts below the tutorials! I can’t jam all the info into one video 😏 so you can also find some useful thoughts below! If you learn something in advance, your drawings will become smoother and more confident.

So grab a cup of coffee or tea, and let’s dive into these few sentences :)
I’ll take you through every step, each brushstroke and layer (and yes, I use a lot of layers!).

Go at your own pace

If you get stuck or find it hard to follow along, just pause the video to catch up, or replay the parts you need to watch again. This is all about learning, and it need time!

In each of my tutorials, I try to teach you a slightly different skills. Lesson by lesson, post by post, you’ll collect many small techniques, tips, and tricks that you can apply to any of your drawings.

And yes, I’ll probably repeat myself sometimes (or often)— but as the saying goes: mastery comes with practice.

Basic skills

So, if you need dive deeper in topic like shading, highlights, layers and so on I created a whole post about this (and much more)!

Two parts

I split this tutorial into two parts, because someone may want to draw just a pumpkin. In this case, your character can hold one hand just near the body, or you can draw the leaf like a waving hand :)

In case you are ready to continue with cute flame fella in the lantern and a simple background + the final super touch of the highlights, join me here :)

Inspiration

If you don’t like the shape of my pumpkin in the tutorial, no problem at all! Here is some inspiration you can follow or come up with your own creation!

  • Tip for the smile and eyes: the mouth and eyes are cut out, but it’s not paper, pumpkins have a thick skin, so don’t forget to draw it :)

  • The broom can be tiny and hang in space, or big and touch the ground. But don’t draw it lower than the pumpkin, just in case the pumpkin is flying. And why not, it’s Halloween after all!

  • Draw any lanternt you can imagine, but keep in mind that whether it’s glass or metal, there tends to be a lot of glare and reflections.

Sketch

The sketch won’t be a part of your final drawing, but it gives you a solid base for your coloring. If you struggle here and need a little support, you can always grab a PNG outline or, even better, a stamp with the sketch. It’s all in one spooky package with sketches for two more tutorials and also full ready-to-use stamps! Check it out!

Useful tech details

I used terms like “layers” and “clipping masks” – let me explain what it is, so you can easily use them later:

  • layers: it is like drawing on “see-through sheets”—one for the body, one for the eyes, etc. They let me color or fix things without messing up the whole drawing, therefore I use a lot of layers. In Procreate, the layers icon looks like two little squares (in the top right corner).

  • clipping mask – this one keeps my colors inside the lines/shapes. I tap on the particular layer, choose “Clipping Mask,” and anything I draw will only show up where it’s supposed to. Super helpful for clean coloring!

  • Size of my canvas: 9 x 9 inches, 340 DPI, RGB or Display P3 Color profile -if you have no idea what I’m talking about 😄 no worries—just check out this postand it’ll all make sense!
